As a rookie, I made a bunch of mistakes. First, when Mary spoke she exploded with kind confidence and warmth. But when I took the first couple of shots, I asked her to remain neutral in her expressions. I didn't notice this wasn't the right thing for her until I got home... I was too busy struggling with my tripod and trying to find the perfect backdrop I had envisioned before our meeting (rookie). I was also a bit nervous because it's one thing to take pictures of my kids, but it's another to take pictures of a "stranger". There's a sort of expectation they'll turn out OK.
Sometimes, I learn a new trick with my camera or new function in photoshop. Today, the lesson was more about the mood and the person and learning to go with the flow.
